Carnegie Mellon University
The committee for Belonging Engagement in the Language Technologies Institute was established to work with faculty, staff and students in the department and across the university to create a climate that is fosters a sense of community and support for all who work and study here.

Initiatives

The various initiatives of the Belonging Engagement in LTI (BELTI) committee are organized according to the framework established by the School of Computer Science strategic plan, namely: Training and Education, Access and Success, Measuring Progress, and Community. Our goals and initiatives include: (i) implementing mentoring programs to provide support for students; (ii) including students in the LTI admissions process; (iii) requesting feedback from the LTI community, and (iv) engaging in community building through events such as town halls and smaller group discussions that facilitate the exchange of personal stories from an engagement and belonging perspective.

Resources

CMU and SCS offer resources to faculty, students and staff to support them in their quest to build a community that holds Belonging and Engagement as core values, and simultaneously challenges systems that have historically perpetuated injustices.

Bias Busters Training

BiasBusters@CMU was developed in concert with Google. The program was piloted in the School of Computer Science (BiasBusters@SCS, CMU) to engage over issues of bias and inclusion. BiasBusters sessions are led by members of the CMU community who have volunteered to be trained as program facilitators.
